Analysis Outline

Well because I missed class on Tuesday I didn't really recieve the outline to work on my paper with, but I did talk to Stephen and basically got the jist of what was on the outline and just working on that made it easier for me to write my paper. It definitally helped me out because it put the paper into perspective for me.

Thesis Statement

When analyzing Ursula Leguin's paper, "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas," the amount of symbolism that is used is excessively descriptive. This gives the reader many different ways of seeing the novel, and looking close enough, you can see that the child in the story is our deepest regrets that we can't deal with and throw in the closet.

Critical Analyzation

While analyzing these papers, I realized a lot more symbolism occuring that I had before. This helped me to get a better view what the author was trying to get across or what I felt that the story meant. I really enjoyed this exercise because it helped me to see more in depth and I enjoyed trying to problem solve these stories and unravel the inner story.

Womens Conditions in the 1900s

For this blog, I am supposed to write about how women were treated in the 1900s. Unlike many men, I feel that women should receive the same treatment as men do because they do have to work just as hard as we do achieve anything in America. Even though I believe this, I don’t think that they should be allowed to hold the position of President. The only reason that I believe this is because I feel they would be more stubborn and less aggressive in the case of us needing to go to war. Other than this, I will try to explain the way that women were treated in the early 1900s.
In the early 1900s, women were not treated as we as they were now. Nearly all of the women that were living in that time period were working inside of the household and only a very few ever worked outside in factories or other jobs outside of the home. The most normal time for women to work outside of the home was if they were teachers. Women were still considered inferior to men, as evidenced by lower wages, and fewer educational and employment opportunities. (Women’s Lives 1900-1920). This is what made women push for more equal treatment because they realized that they should get the same treatment as males did. Women still aren’t treated in an equal way as they should be. The only way for this to happen is for women and men who support them to keep on pushing to get more equal rights.

Symbolism

Symbols in Short Stories
The White Herron
Cow- The cow symbolizes the child’s one and only friend. It is the only thing that will play games with her, such as hide and seek. Obviously the cow doesn’t realize this, but the child does.
Gun- The power that men believe that they hold
Sylvia- Innocence
Sea- To me, I notice the sea as being something that is forbidden because Sylvia has never seen it but can hear it calling to her.

The Yellow Wallpaper
House- When I was reading about the house, I started to think that the woman was just dreaming about a house that she had lived at in the past but had been damaged.
The old wallpaper- boring and depressing part of life.
Ripping of the Wallpaper- Starting your life over, or taking and your life and forgetting about all of the old things.

An Occurance and The Most Dangerous Game

Personally I wasn't a fan of the Occurance at Owl Creek Bridge, so I'd rather talk about The Most Dangerous Game. I remember reading that story back when I was younger but it took me until about halfway through it to remember it. Both times that I have read this, I loved it. It was a great short story. Just the amount of description throughout it and also how brutal and inhumane it is. The way that a general could buy an island and do that with real humans. Its pretty cool though how the story ends. The way that the hunter gets the general back at his own game is awesome.

Omelas

As I was reading the short story, I started to get the feeling that the child that was locked up was describing our inner and darkest secrets. What we do is lock them away and try not to think about them. When it talks about people seeing the "child", and walking away into the mountains, I feel like it means that they had committed suicide and were headed to heaven, also known as the mountains. Idk it probably has no connection to that, but its just the way that I see this as being.

Paper Writing Process

So the process of writing my paper has gone well so far. Other than that this paper is nearly one of the longest papers that I have ever had to write, its going pretty smooth. I couldn't figure out what I wanted my topic to be on but I finially decided on whether torture should be allowed in certain circumstances. I thought it would be a good topic because this paper is kind of like torture. Haha jk. but seriously. The paper is coming along pretty well but like i said, it is still pretty hard.

Blog.... About?

Well i'm not sure what to blog about because i missed class. Not gonna lie, just forgot to set my alarm... I know... i should be responsible now that i'm in college and set my alarm accordingly. Other than that, the Vikings lost. I'm losing faith in them. They are really starting to get dissapointing. Unfortunately i'm not a bandwagon type of person so i don't quit on my team. Since they lost to the Jets there probably isn't any hope for them to go to the playoffs but anything can happen. Other than that, my weekend was pretty awesome. I got a bunch of homemade applesauce from my grandma's house and the little league flag football team that I coach won their second game. My little brother threw for a touchdown and also had a reception for a touchdown. He's a stud.

List Developed In Class

For my list that I made in class, I chose the death penalty costing more than holding them in jail, the large cost of college, and annoying people. The resolution that I had for the death penalty would be only giving them one or two appeals. The appeals are what make the death penalty cost more. The men on death row appeal so many times that it just racks up the price. To fix the price on college, its simple. Lower the price. Of course you would have to come up with a way to do that. For the annoying people, we should just put them in a room full of people who are more annoying than they are and then they can see how annoying it actually is haha.

Group Work

Idk about the whole revision group project. It was interesting in a way because we only had a day and a half to find a time when the entire group could meet and the only time that we had was in an hour. I found this really difficult for our group to make a quality presentation. Although we had limited time, I felt that all of the groups did a really excellent job and that if we were to do it again with that short of time, everyone would be able to find time in their schedule. All in all, I enjoyed everyone's ideas on revising. In the future, a little bit more of a heads up would be nice though :)

Life on New Planet

So for the blog today, I just figured I would write about the article on life on another planet. I found the article really interesting. Throughout the entire article I kept on thinking that we were going to be attacked by a group of aliens. But that's just sci-fy. I guess that the one of the main reason's why most people don't believe in Extra Terrestrial beings is because they are Christians and believe that God only made them. Myself, I believe that there could be ETs.... I think as long as there is the right amount of water, air, and food sources, micro-organisms could start to evolve and create beings.

Thesis Statement

I wasn't sure what my thesis statement actually was but as I got towards the end, I noticed this sentence and realized that it was the best summary of my paper. "The police have the right to do whatever is necessary and proper, and when it comes to animals, any unethical treatment that is suspected is subjected to immediate action." I'm not all too good when it comes to writing papers in a form where I have to identify parts and pieces of a paper. Once I start writing, I just keep going and don't worry about anything else. I feel that if I pause at any moment I might lose my train of thought and that could be why my paper's sometime are all over the place and don't make much sense. Otherwise I feel that I am a pretty descent writer.

America Bashers

America Bashers was the excerpt that I decided to read. I thought that it would be cool to see who exactly the Bashers were, and when i found out that they were citizens that were actually citizens of the U.S. i was appalled. If they have a problem with the U.S. then they have all the right to get out of here and go find a better country to live in. We don't need them. I felt that the author kind of went on and on about the different people. I enjoyed his rant on the My Lai Massacre. He was absolutely right when he said that Abu Ghraib prison situation was no where near as terrible as the My Lai Massacre. People are getting worked up over something that didn't really come close. In My Lai, the Americans murdered unarmed civilians, where as all they did at Abu Ghraib was make the Iraqians take their close off and lay on each other. Calm down people. They go and murder our soldiers and tape it so that we can see it and its worse when we just humiliate them a little. Go figure... we're supposed to take the high road right? Cause we're the good ol' U.S... we're in a war. You aren't supposed to be nice during a war. How else would you come out on top?

Peer Editing Review

Throughout my entire elementary and high school career, I had never done a peer review, nor had anyone peer reviewed my paper. I had done many editing of other peoples papers though. I really found this to be more helpful than having someone just fix the gramatical errors. I was given another perspective on the paper and realized that i needed to have more detail throughout it. I liked being able to help out other people on their own papers and learning about a time when a tradegy struck their lives. All in all it would be a good thing for us to continue doing.

Random

So today i'm gonna blog about anything that comes to mind while i'm talking. First thing was the literacy narrative. I really enjoyed writing it. I'm not a big fan of writing but it was pretty cool being able to actually write something that happened to you instead of having to write a paper on something that barely affects you. For mine I wrote about my dad's car accident, and it was really cool being able to think about my past and talk about it. It was cool being able to get it off my chest because I'm not really good at talking to other people about it, whereas writing about it isn't as hard to do. Thats all... Have a good day.

The Dead Poets Society

For my blog today I am going to write about the saying "Carpe Diem." I really like this term because it is one of the best advice that you could receive from anyone. To seize the day is something that you should always do. It will really help you to achieve many more things in you life as long as you follow it thoughout your entire day. I really believe that people don't realize how important it is until they try it for themselves. "CARPE DIEM"

September 9th Reading Assignment

Being a non-fan towards Hillary Clinton, I expected that the story was going to be a buzz kill. As I was reading it though, I found myself getting more and more into it. It was a really interesting short story and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. The way that she described her life in such depth really made everything seem much clearer and it didn't seem like she was just saying things that would make her look good in people's eyes. All in all it was a descent read.

So starting out "The Notebook," I was thinking, "Well this is going to be a dull and cheesy story." After reading the first page I started to notice how in depth and how well he described everything. This really made my reading experience much more enjoyable. I could imagine while I was reading the halls that he was walking through and the people he was walking past. I would say that these two short stories were very interesting, and as gay as it sounds, I wouldn't mind reading the rest of "The Notebook."

Sept. 7 Reading Assignment

As I was reading “Learning to Read and Write” by Douglass, I started to feel very intrigued. I found it quite interesting the different ways that he taught himself how to read and write. Being an African American child in that day and age would have been nearly too bad to bear. As I sit here and read about how much he loved to read, it makes me realize that reading and writing really isn’t given the amount of appreciation that it deserves. Without reading and writing, it would be difficult to communicate with others. My favorite part of the excerpt was when he was telling the reader about using the shipyard timbers to teach him how to write letters and then challenging other children by saying he could write better.

Contrary to “Learning to Read and Write,” I found “Me Talk Pretty One Day” by Sedaris not near as interesting. The short story was too slow paced for my liking and I didn’t find any part about it humorous or in any way intriguing. I didn’t understand the type of writing that the writer was trying to accomplish. I felt like the story went absolutely nowhere and the ending was too dull and dry for me to have any positive remarks on it.

As for the last reading article, “When Mr. Pirzada Came to Town,” I found it the best out of the other two. The author really got my attention with the way the beginning was started out. The short story stayed interesting throughout the entire writing. I like the history references that the author used. I really enjoyed this final piece and wouldn’t mind reading another of his short stories.
